How to fill in the panel schedule
- Pick the number of spaces on your panel and, if you like, add the panel name, location and main breaker.
- Add a circuit for each breaker. Give it the first space it uses, one or two poles, the breaker size, a description and the load in VA.
- Watch the two leg totals and the imbalance. Move a one-pole breaker to the other leg to even them out.
- Print the sheet for the panel door or download the CSV for your records and your quote.
Write descriptions that someone else can read
Use the room and the load, not a name or a guess: "Kitchen counter receptacles" or "Heat pump, outdoor unit" rather than "Mom's room". Label spare spaces too, and say "Spare, breaker off" when a breaker is installed but unused. See the circuit directory rule in the questions below.
Once the schedule is done, size the wire for each circuit with the wire size calculator, check long runs with the voltage drop calculator, and see whether an existing panel has room for a new load with the load calculator.
Panel schedule questions
- What is a panel schedule?
- A panel schedule is the list of what every breaker in an electrical panel feeds: the space number, the breaker size, the circuit description and the load. It is the circuit directory that goes on or beside the panel door, and the working sheet an electrician uses to see how full a panel is and how balanced its two legs are.
- Does the NEC require a panel schedule?
- NEC 2023 & 2026 408.4(A) require every circuit to have a legible and permanent description. For a panelboard it goes in a circuit directory on the face of the panel, inside it, or in an approved location adjacent to the door. The description has to be clear and specific, spare positions with an unused breaker included, and not depend on who lives there. This template gives you that list; the local authority decides how it must be posted.
- How are the spaces and phases numbered?
- In most 120/240 V single-phase panelboards the spaces run down two columns, odd numbers on the left and even on the right. Each row sits on one leg and the legs alternate row by row, so spaces 1 and 2 are on leg A, 3 and 4 on leg B, 5 and 6 on leg A, and so on. A two-pole breaker takes two neighbouring spaces in the same column (for example 1 and 3), so it lands on both legs. The template lays the sheet out this way. Check your panel label, because some panels are built differently.
- How do I balance the load between the two legs?
- Add up the VA on each leg. The template shows both totals, the amps each leg carries at the nominal line voltage, and the imbalance: the gap between the legs as a share of the heavier one. Moving a one-pole breaker to a space on the other leg moves its whole load across; a two-pole load is always split evenly, so it never changes the balance.
- Is the connected load the same as a load calculation?
- No. The template adds up the VA you type in. A Code load calculation applies demand factors and rules for specific loads, so it gives a different number. To check whether an existing home can take a new load such as an EV charger or a heat pump, use the load calculator.
- Can I get the schedule into Excel or Google Sheets?
- Yes. Download CSV writes one row per space with the panel name, location, space, phase, circuit, breaker, poles and load, and it opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers. Print schedule gives a clean sheet for the panel door. Nothing is saved on our server: the schedule lives in your browser until you close the page, so download it first.
